Photo story prompts
Questions to ask about baby's first year
The first year produces more photos than any other and the least sleep to remember them with. You do not need a full baby book. Pick one photo a week and answer three questions; your child will read them one day.
Who
- Who is holding the baby, and what will the baby call them?
- Who visited that week?
- Who does the baby look like in this photo?
- Who made the blanket, the jumper or the toy?
Where and when
- Where were you living then? Which room is this?
- How old was the baby, in weeks or months?
- What time of day was it?
- What was the first place you went together?
Why it mattered
- What had the baby just learned to do?
- What made the baby laugh at that age?
- What were the nights like that week?
- What do you want your child to know about this day?
One tip
Write the age in the note ("14 weeks") as well as the date. It is the first thing you will want to know when you look back.
Common questions
What should I write about baby photos?
The age, who else is in the photo, and one small thing that was true that week: a new sound, a favourite song, what the nights were like. Small, dated details mean most later.
I am already months behind. Is it too late?
No. Start with this week and work back only through the photos you still remember well. An honest note written now is worth more than a perfect book never finished.
